JCAHO Standards EC.1.6 and EC.2.10.3 address inspection, testing, and maintenance of medical equipment. In the past, all equipment that was formally included in the medical equipment management program inventory was required to have maintenance scheduled at least annually (with limited exceptions). However, simple scheduling by calendar may not be the most cost-effective approach for some medical equipment. Effective July 2001 JCAHO allows hospitals to use more sophisticated scheduling techniques for effective maintenance at lower cost. Baretich Engineering can help you capitalize on this opportunity.

JCAHO Standard EC.3.2.1 deals with design criteria used by hospitals for construction and renovation projects. Effective January 2002 this standard will incorporate new infection control language from two sources. The first is the newly revised "Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities" (2001 edition) just released by the American Institute of Architects. The second is the "Guideline for Environmental Infection Control in Healthcare Facilities" which was recently published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in draft form (now withdrawn while a final version is prepared). Baretich Engineering can help you incorporate infection control concerns into the construction design and management process.
